Mastery of sentence formation in written pieces in English

When is a sentence not a sentence?

Outline

The course will focus on the characteristics of mastery teaching in English, with the main focus on writing outcomes.

It will tackle the age-old issue of how to enable children to recognise where they are going wrong in terms of forming and writing their sentences. Building on evidence-based research and successful classroom practice, the course will give delegates strategies surrounding the formation of phrases, clauses and sentences. Colleagues will learn a range of techniques to help them teach writing as a true stand-alone skill.

There will be a strong focus on using talk, discussion, fun practice and drafting alongside the teaching of sentence structure and word classes, with the aim of helping children to master their writing more independently.

Description

Presentations, discussions and work case-studies will focus on the following:
  • Teach less, learn more
  • Less teacher talk and more evidencing learning and progress
  • Space and time to experience and apply

Colleagues will learn more about this:
  • Teaching all children in class, together, most of the time
  • Verbal feedback during lessons, shorter comments in books and highlighting of children’s strengths and areas to improve
  • Spending longer on one idea
